where are american standard toilets made

Have you ever wondered where are American Standard toilets made? The name may cause confusion since their products are actually manufactured in other countries. Nowadays, American Standard’s US-based facilities only produce bathtubs and laundry tubs, leaving the production of toilets for manufacturing plants in Mexico and China.

Read on to know more about the American Standard brands of toilets, faucets, sinks, and other bathroom fixtures. And get to know why they expanded to Mexico and China, of all countries, as their manufacturing locations.

Overall About American Standard Toilets

To give a brief company history, American Standard initially went by the name Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company, which started in 1875. As one of the pioneers in the business, the brand put forward innovations such as the one-piece toilets.

Came 1929, Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company and American Radiator Company merged together, forming the American Radiator and Standard Sanitary Corporation. And by 1967, they officially adopted the name American Standard.

To be clear, the American Stand Brands manufactured its products under many different brand names. Aside from the well-known American Standard, it also has several subsidiaries, such as  Fiat, Eljer, Crane Plumbing, Safety Tubs, and Decorative Panels International.

To further add to the confusion, in 2015, the American Standard Brand was bought by a Japanese company, the LIXIL group. Prior to that, it was owned by Sun Capital, who moved the majority of production from North America to other parts of the world.

Since 1926, the company’s headquarters has been in Piscataway, New Jersey, establishing itself as one of the top manufacturers of toilet- and plumbing-related products. However, its founding location was actually in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

2. Factory locations in the USA

American Standard has 3 production facilities within the US:

  • Salem in eastern Ohio: having been in business since 1988, the plant is responsible for producing Americast bathtubs
  • Grand Prairie in Texas: established in 2017, this is where the brand’s acrylic walk-in bathtubs are produced.
  • Somerset in Kentucky: this factory makes Eljer Fiat tubs, sinks, and shower bases.

As you can see, none of the American Standard toilets are made in the USA.

3. Factory locations around the world

As for production facilities located around the world, the majority are situated in Mexico and China.

  • For your information, Mexico houses American Standard’s biggest manufacturing facility in North America. Situated in Aguascalientes Maquila, the factory is responsible for producing the majority of American Standard toilets.
  • Meanwhile, there are 4 factories located in China—or, to be more specific—in Shanghai, Guangzhou, and two manufacturing plants in Tianjin. These facilities are mostly responsible for producing free-standing bathtubs, faucets, and product components. Only a few American Standard toilets are made in China.

Aside from these two major locations, there are manufacturing facilities in other overseas countries like Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Spain, and many more.

4. What about the American Standard parts?

The brand’s parts are usually manufactured in their own facilities in Mexico and China, with the latter being responsible for a large portion of component parts.

That said, it’s not uncommon for American Standard to buy components from third parties in other countries to save production costs as well. A few notable countries where the brand sources its parts from are New Zealand, Belgium, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc.
